Terrence Higgins Trust are at the forefront of the fight against HIV and improving the nation’s sexual health. They were looking for a partner to help them improve accessibility to self-testing and create a website with a warm and intuitive user experience. Efficient internal management of the site and implementing effective ongoing support were also key objectives for the project.

The existing HIV self-test ordering flow was confusing, lengthy, and not mobile-optimised, leading to high drop-off rates. Eligibility rules were complex (risk factors, location, employment/student status) and not clearly routed. The solution was to build a new self-test microsite on WordPress, with a mobile-first, multi-step form. The forms were placed above the fold and broken into simple, progressive steps with clear instructions.

Previously, users who didn’t qualify for free kits often had their journey end abruptly, creating frustration. We designed a clear routing logic (free vs paid paths) to handle all eligibility scenarios consistently, adding supportive messaging and alternative pathways for users not eligible for free kits.

Privacy and compliance concerns around sensitive health data were addressed with integrated SMS verification and secure payment gateway and fulfilment systems, ensuring GDPR compliance, SSL security, and secure reporting/export functions for sensitive data.

6rs turned our extensive requirements into a fully-functioning website, which is both a thing of beauty and a very usable website. They have been very supportive and responsive through user testing and go-live.” — Kian Scott-Loach, Head of Digital, Terrence Higgins Trust

The refreshed website reduced drop-offs by making the process quicker, clearer, and reassuring for users. Improved accessibility and trust has been achieved through mobile-first design, plain language, and privacy safeguarding. Streamlined internal workflows, with postcode management, reporting, and flexible content tools, have given the THT team more autonomy, enabling them to scale campaigns confidently and offer both free and paid tests within one consistent user journey.
