Nourishing Our Future Shaping a healthier future for Essex’s youngest children

Happy face emoji with a pink tongue, cheerful and playful expression.

Working in Partnership with Essex County Council, Anglia Ruskin University developed the pioneering Nourish Our Future project, with the aim of researching and combating the issue of childhood obesity in Essex. Our role was to create an engaging brand identity, website and promotional collateral for the initiative that would bring it to the attention of the academic community, practitioners and the general public.

What we did
  • Brand identity
  • Logo design
  • Print design

The objective was to create a positive and vibrant brand that could appeal to corporate, practitioner and child audiences, creating a sense of fun that was underpinned by a serious issue and credible research. The Nourish Our Future project is first and foremost, a research project, working with early years settings across Essex to understand the current food consumption, identifying good practice and exploring the challenges faced by practitioners, childminders and parents with the provision of healthy food.

The brand identity had to be bright and engaging, encouraging early years settings to participate in the research, as well as having the flexibility to work in a more formal and academic environment. The core brand is fun and playful, with the icon derived from the typeface and representing a smiling face with its tongue out. We developed a series of facial expressions and a range of stickers that could be used across promotional materials and given to children at participating settings.

The whole concept is beyond anything I could have imagined. Thanks so much. The whole design is so striking and we love the colour scheme. ” — Dr Kay Aaronricks, Associate Professor, Anglia Ruskin University

With the core identity in place, we turned our attentions to the website and creating resources for the NOF annual conference. The brief for the site was to create a positive, vibrant and educational online space for parents, partners and settings to learn more about the project and benefit from the resources on offer. It had to accommodate a wide range of media and provide an intuitive content management experience for the NOF team, who need add new articles, resources and content on a regular basis.

We also created the Early Years Nutrition Guide for Essex-based Families, a 44-page publication offering nutritional advice and tools to settings and parents, which was distributed at the conference. Digital templates were created in Canva for the NOF team to edit going forward.
